| Resumo | LANDSAT imagery provides a synoptic view and a repetitive coverage of the earth's surface. Various disciplines (e.g. agriculture, forestry, geography, geology, etc.)are employing LANDSAT data to aid in understanding many previously difficult problems and to provide new information. The geological application of LANDSAT imagery is based on the interpretation of such features as regional fractures and folds, lineament and drainage patters, and general lithologic variations; interpretation, in turn, is effected by the recognition of variations in tone and texture, landforms, remified channels and land usage. Mineral and petroleum exploration may be aided through the identification of anomalous patterns and features, and suitable structures that may be indicative of areas which warrant more detailed examination. Interpretation of images may be aided by the use of computers such as the IMAGE-100 system. The latter has the ability to extract thematic information and to enhance the image so that the user may see certain features better. Optimum use of LANDSAT imagery could result in considerable reduction in cost and time in the reconnaissance geological mapping of large areas. |
